I can't believe it, but tomorrow will be the end to our first full week! I am very impressed with the kids and how responsible they have been with bringing their homework back and forth. It is a great way to start the school year, so keep up the good work!
Tomorrow will also be our first spelling test. We have been practicing reading and spelling the words in a variety of ways and have found the way that best suites your child. We will test them that way tomorrow :) I also have the students pick one word to use in a sentence on their paper. This portion isn't graded but if you wanted to practice with them that would be awesome! They can pick any word they want from the list. Here is a picture of our words in case you have lost the list.
For reading we have started our first unit, answering WH questions. Being able to answer WH questions is not only an important reading skill but it is an essential component to everyday life. Think about how many times a day we have to answer questions such as "Who is picking up the kids today?" "Where do we have to go after school?" "What are you going to take for lunch" etc. The kids have taken a pre-test and have made it through 2 lessons. I am very excited to see how they do on the post test in a few weeks. Our main focus this week has been Who (tells a person or animal) and What (tells an action or item). We have been taking notes and I have been "quizzing" the students regularly. Feel free to extend the teaching at home. Ask them Who and What questions. Here is a picture of the anchor chart we have been using as well as the pre-test.
For writing we have continued to work with those WH words and sentence formation. The kids have so many great ideas and are able to tell A LOT of facts about the prompts but, they are struggling to make them into a complete sentence. Right now we are working on the basic Who did what sentences. I am hoping to add in when and where shortly. Here is an example of the pre-test and a SMARTboard lesson we have done.
In math we are working on a variety of things as this is the area the kids differ the most. For the most part we have focused on reading and writing numbers in number and word form, adding within 10 and telling time.
As you can see it has been a busy week. The kids have done a ton of academics and are starting to get the hang of their schedule. Each student has their own personal schedule to help with independence throughout the day.
Here is a look at the first craft that we did. We will do 2 crafts a month. During craft time we focus on a lot of skills and the kids have a ton of fun. Prepping for these crafts takes time and if anyone would like to come in and volunteer their time to help prep the materials please let me know.
I can already tell we are going to have an un"bee"lievable year!
